Terroir and Typicity of rosé wines

Terroir and typicity of Rosé wines of Provence

Title :

INFLUENCE OF NATURAL FACTORS OF TERROIR ON THE NON REPRODUCIBLE CHARACTER OF ROSE WINES FROM PROVENCE

Origin :

Provence occupies a position as leader in the production of Rosé wine and its wines have become a reference. The « Provence style » is recognized and the temptation to copy exists in other vineyards. To keep this first place, the Provence wine growers want to show how much the typicity of their rosé wines is strong. This is linked to terroir, in the soil and climatic sense of the term, but equally to the human factor and the role of the winemaker.

Period :

Since 2015-2020

Objectives :

Evaluate the influence of natural factors of terroir, this means soil and climate, on the quality and typicity of Provence Rosé wines. Complete this approach by a survey to highlight the importance of the technical choices of the wine grower, which could, for some, accentuate the role of natural factors.

Build a vocabulary and a specific argumentation for each type of wine and each zone of production.

Partners :

  • Centre de Recherche et d’Expérimentation sur le vin Rosé
  • Institut Français de la Vigne et du Vin
  • CIVP, ODGs provençales, INAO

Application :

A study of the influence of soil and climate on grapes and rosé wine, by following a network of parcels of Grenache in the vineyards of Provence.

From AOC Côtes de Provence, Coteaux varois en Provence and Coteaux d’Aix en Provence. « Control» parcels outside the region will also be incorporated in the protocol. The study will be completed over the following years if it is pertinent, by the observation of a complementary grape variety of Grenache like Cinsault or Syrah.

Studies are made with different wine growers of the terroirs of Provence in order to include the notion of human factors and to understand its importance in the terroir approach.
