EDGARR project

CREATION OF RESISTANT AND
QUALITATIVE VARIETIES FOR ROSE WINE

Grape variety : Varietal Innovation EDGARR

Title :

EXPLOITATION OF GENOMIC SELECTION IN ORDER TO ACCELERATE THE CREATION OF RESISTANT AND QUALITATIVE VARIETIES FOR ROSE WINE SECTOR.

Origin :

To help French wine growing to reduce input while preserving the internationally recognised quality of its produce, it is important to develop new varieties, which combine resistance to parasites and irreproachable organoleptic qualities.
The particular case of Rosé wines and the Mediterranean vineyards had not been taken into account in preceding selection programmes. The encounter between a laboratory specialised in the genetics of varietal creation (UMT Génovigne) and the team from a Centre of expertise specially dedicated to Rosé wine (Centre du Rosé) gave rise to an original programme that meets the expectations of producers from Provence and Languedoc.

Period :

2017-2019

Objectives :

The EDGARR project is a varietal creation programme, which aims to obtain varieties that resist to mildew and oidium (powdery mildew), with qualities that are specific to the vinification of rosé. The originality of the EDGARR project is to take advantage of the new scientific and technical knowledge in plant improvement such as genomic selection to accelerate the identification of relevant varieties. During this presentation we will show the different stages of the project, and the first results.

Partners :

Application :

The EDGARR project proposes to work with all the actors in order to define together the objectives of varietal creation for an important sector of French winegrowing, rosé wine. These new varieties must satisfy the need for reduction of phytosanitary (crop protection) input, but also to help support the development of this market share for the French wine making sector.

This project is comprised of three actions :

  • Action 1. Finalisation of requirements specifications for future varieties destined for the rosé wine sector (ideotypes).
  • Action 2. Obtaining models, derived from the genomic selection method, for the target character (crosses between emblematic varieties Cinsault and Vermentino and the 2 genitors which bear pyramidal resistance).
  • Action 3. Selection of around twenty genotypes which are as close as possible to ideotypes previously defined in action 1
